If your snoring gets worse in June, or only in the bedroom, or every year at the same time, you are probably not looking at a snoring problem. You are looking at an allergy problem that becomes audible at night.
Allergies do not cause the vibration itself. What they do is swell the nasal lining, and a swollen nose changes how you breathe once you lie down. That change is what turns a quiet sleeper into a snorer, and it is one of the few causes of snoring you can genuinely do something about.
Here is how the mechanism works, what the population research found, and what actually reduces it.
The Short Answer
Yes, allergies can cause snoring, and the link has been measured in a large population study rather than assumed.
Research published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology surveyed 4,927 people, with 911 of them also studied objectively in a sleep laboratory. People who often or almost always had night time symptoms of rhinitis, defined as five or more nights a month, were significantly more likely to report habitual snoring on three to seven nights a week, along with chronic daytime sleepiness and unrefreshing sleep.
The objective measurements backed this up. Habitual snorers had significantly lower nasal airflow than non snorers. And people who reported nasal congestion caused by allergy were 1.8 times more likely to have moderate to severe sleep disordered breathing than those without it.
The researchers' own conclusion is the useful part: allergic rhinitis is a common cause of nasal obstruction, and it is a modifiable risk factor. Unlike your jaw shape or your age, this one can be changed.
How a Blocked Nose Becomes a Snore
Snoring happens when air passes a narrowed section of the upper airway and makes the soft tissue vibrate. Your nose is not usually the part that vibrates. It is the part that decides how the rest of the airway behaves.
The chain runs like this.
An allergen triggers histamine release in the nasal lining. The tissue swells and mucus production increases, so the nasal passage narrows. Breathing through a narrow nose takes more effort, so at some point during the night you switch to your mouth.
Mouth breathing is where the snoring starts. With the mouth open, the jaw drops back and the tongue moves towards the back of the throat, narrowing the space behind it. The soft palate is left less supported and more free to flutter.
There is a second effect on top of that. Struggling to pull air through a blocked nose creates a stronger negative pressure in the throat on each breath, which tends to pull the floppy walls of the airway inward. Both effects push in the same direction.
This is why the nose matters out of proportion to its size, and why clearing it often quietens snoring that seemed to have nothing to do with the nose at all.
Why Allergies Are Worse at Night

Several things line up against you after lights out.
You are lying in the allergen. House dust mites live in mattresses, pillows, and bedding, and their droppings are one of the most common indoor allergy triggers in the UK. Your face spends seven or eight hours pressed into that environment.
Pollen comes to bed with you. Pollen sticks to hair, skin, and clothing during the day, then transfers to your pillow. People often blame the bedroom when the exposure actually happened outdoors.
Lying flat swells the nose further. Drainage from the head slows when you are horizontal, and blood pools in the nasal lining. An allergic nose that was manageable while upright can close entirely once you are down.
Your own anti inflammatory rhythm dips. Cortisol, which naturally suppresses inflammation, is at its lowest in the early hours of the morning. Allergic symptoms tend to be at their worst at exactly that point in the night.
The nasal cycle picks a side. Your nose naturally alternates which nostril does most of the work. Add allergic swelling to the side that is currently resting and that nostril can shut completely, which we explained in why one side of your nose is always blocked at night.
Working Out Which Allergen Is Involved

The timing of your snoring usually identifies the trigger, and that determines which fix will work.
Worse every night, all year. This points to dust mites, and often to pets if they sleep in the room. Symptoms are typically worst on waking and improve during the day once you are out of the bedroom.
Worse in spring and summer only. This points to pollen. In the UK the Met Office pollen calendar puts tree pollen from late March to mid May, grass pollen from mid May to July with peaks in early June and early July, and weed pollen from the end of June to September. Grass pollen affects the majority of hay fever sufferers, which is why so many people notice their snoring around June.
Better when you sleep somewhere else. If a hotel or a relative's spare room reliably fixes it, the trigger is in your bedroom rather than in you.
Worse after redecorating, or in a damp room. Consider mould spores, which are a common and under recognised indoor trigger.
Other clues that allergy rather than anatomy is driving your snoring include sneezing fits in the evening, itchy or watery eyes, a runny nose that switches to blockage when you lie down, and clearing your throat frequently in the morning from postnasal drip.
Reducing the Allergen Load in Your Bedroom

This is the part with the largest effect and the smallest cost, and it takes a few weeks rather than a night to show up.
Wash bedding weekly at 60 degrees. Cooler washes remove some allergen but do not reliably kill dust mites. This is the single highest value change for a year round sufferer.
Use mite proof covers on the mattress, duvet, and pillows. They create a barrier between you and the largest mite reservoir in the house. Pillows in particular are worth replacing every couple of years.
Shower before bed during pollen season. Rinsing hair and skin stops the day's pollen transferring to the pillow. Drying laundry indoors during high pollen days does the same job for clothes and sheets.
Keep the bedroom window shut on high pollen mornings. Pollen counts are typically highest in the early morning and again in the evening.
Keep pets out of the bedroom. Dander is persistent, and this change is unpopular and effective in roughly equal measure.
Reduce dust traps and damp. Fewer soft furnishings, regular vacuuming with a HEPA filter, and keeping humidity moderate all reduce both mites and mould, since mites thrive in humid air.
Treating the Swelling Itself
Reducing exposure is not always enough, particularly during the grass pollen peak.
Steroid nasal sprays are the mainstay for allergic rhinitis with nasal blockage, because they reduce the inflammation that causes the swelling. They work gradually rather than instantly, so they need consistent daily use, ideally started before your season begins rather than after symptoms arrive.
Antihistamines help with sneezing, itching, and a runny nose. They are generally less effective against blockage specifically, which is the symptom that matters most for snoring.
Saline rinses physically wash pollen, dust, and mucus out of the nose before bed. They contain no medication and can be used alongside anything else. Use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled water and clean the device after each use.
Decongestant sprays work quickly but should not be used for more than about three consecutive days, because rebound congestion can develop and leave you worse than before.
A pharmacist can advise on which of these suits you, particularly if you are pregnant, taking other medication, or managing another condition.
Where Nasal Strips Fit
Allergy treatment reduces the swelling. A nasal strip addresses a different part of the problem: the mechanical width of the nasal valve, which is the narrowest point of the airway.
The two work on different mechanisms, which is why they combine well. A steroid spray reduces inflammation inside the passage over days or weeks. A strip lifts the outer walls tonight. If your nose is narrow to begin with, allergic swelling has less margin to eat into, and opening the outside can offset some of what the swelling has taken.
Strips are drug free, which makes them usable every night without the rebound problem that limits decongestant sprays, and usable alongside allergy medication without interaction. Massner's medium and large strips are sized for narrower and wider noses, and fit matters more than most people expect, since a strip that overhangs the sides loses much of its lift.
What a strip will not do is treat the allergy. If your nose is swollen shut from an untreated pollen response, widening the outside of it is a partial measure. When to See a Doctor
Speak to a GP or pharmacist if over the counter treatment is not controlling your symptoms, if you need a decongestant spray for more than a few days at a time, or if symptoms are affecting work, school, or sleep across a whole season. Allergy testing can identify the trigger, and referral options exist for people whose symptoms do not respond to standard treatment.
Seek advice sooner if snoring comes with pauses in breathing, gasping, or choking during sleep, or if you are exhausted during the day despite a full night in bed.
