Why Does Alcohol Make Snoring Worse?

Almost everyone who snores has noticed it. A quiet sleeper after a normal evening becomes impossible to share a room with after a few drinks. Partners notice it long before the snorer does.

This is one of the few things about snoring that has been measured properly rather than assumed. Alcohol changes how the airway behaves during sleep, the effect has been quantified across multiple controlled trials, and it is largest in exactly the people who already snore.

Here is what happens, what the research found, and what actually helps on a night when you have been drinking.

Snoring is vibration. Air passes through a narrowed section of the upper airway, and the soft tissue lining it flutters. The narrower and floppier that section is, the louder the sound.

Your airway does not stay open by itself. It is held open by muscle tone, particularly from the dilator muscles including the genioglossus, the large muscle of the tongue. These muscles relax during sleep, which is why snoring is a night time event, and they relax further under a sedative.

Alcohol is a sedative. It deepens the relaxation of those muscles, so the airway narrows more than it would on a sober night, and tissue that normally stays out of the airflow starts to vibrate.

The picture is not quite as tidy as the usual explanation suggests. One study measuring genioglossus activity in healthy young people while awake found only a minor effect, which points to other contributors, such as increased resistance further up the airway and changes in how easily you rouse from an obstruction. The practical outcome is the same, but it is worth knowing the mechanism is more layered than "alcohol relaxes your throat".

What the Research Actually Measured

In 2018, a systematic review and meta-analysis in Sleep Medicine Reviews pooled 14 randomised controlled trials covering 422 people, and compared objective sleep breathing measurements before and after alcohol was given.

The findings were consistent:

  • The apnoea hypopnoea index, which counts breathing interruptions per hour, rose significantly after alcohol.
  • Average blood oxygen saturation during sleep fell.
  • The lowest oxygen level reached during the night dropped further.
  • Individual breathing events lasted longer.

The size of the effect depended heavily on who was drinking. Across everyone, the index rose by about 2.3 events per hour. In people who snore, it rose by about 4.2. In people diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea, it rose by about 7.1.

That gradient is the important part. Alcohol does not affect all sleepers equally. The more compromised your airway already is, the more a drink costs you.

Why It Hits Snorers Hardest

If your airway has plenty of room, extra relaxation still leaves enough space for quiet airflow. If your airway is already narrow, whether from anatomy, weight, nasal blockage, or age, the same relaxation is the difference between silent breathing and heavy snoring.

This explains a pattern people often find confusing. Two people drink the same amount. One sleeps silently, the other keeps the house awake. The alcohol is doing the same thing to both airways. The difference is how much margin each one had to begin with.

The Nose Gets Involved Too

Alcohol widens blood vessels, and that includes the vessels in the lining of your nose. Swollen nasal tissue means a narrower nasal passage and more resistance to airflow.

A blocked nose then pushes you towards breathing through your mouth. Mouth breathing lets the jaw drop back, which narrows the space behind the tongue, which makes snoring worse again. It is a small loop, and drinking sets it going.

Red wine, beer, and cider tend to be the worst offenders for people who are sensitive, partly because of histamine and sulphites in addition to the alcohol itself. If your nose reliably blocks after one specific drink, that is worth noting rather than dismissing.

Why the Second Half of the Night Is Worse

Alcohol makes you fall asleep faster, which is the reason a nightcap feels like it works. What it does after that is less helpful.

It suppresses REM sleep early in the night, then as your body clears the alcohol you get a rebound: lighter sleep, more REM than usual, and more awakenings in the second half of the night. Sleep becomes fragmented even when the total hours look normal.

REM matters for snoring specifically, because muscle tone drops to its lowest during REM sleep. Pushing more REM into the later hours, on top of an airway that is still recovering, is why snoring often gets louder around 3 or 4 a.m. rather than immediately at bedtime.

The body clears roughly one unit of alcohol per hour, though this varies with body size, sex, food, and individual metabolism. A large glass of wine is about three units, so it takes around three hours to clear.

The practical guidance most sleep clinicians give is to stop drinking at least three to four hours before bed, so the sedative effect on the airway has largely passed by the time you are asleep. For heavier drinking, the window needs to be longer.

Two other things worth knowing:

The effect is dose dependent. One drink is not the same as four. If cutting alcohol entirely is not the plan, reducing the amount and moving it earlier in the evening both help, and you do not have to do either perfectly to hear a difference.

UK guidance is 14 units a week. The Chief Medical Officers' low risk drinking guideline recommends no more than 14 units a week for adults, spread over three or more days rather than concentrated into one or two. Spreading it out also spreads out the nights your airway is affected.

Some evenings will involve alcohol. These reduce the damage.

Sleep on your side. Lying on your back lets gravity pull the tongue and soft palate backwards, and alcohol has already reduced the muscle tone that would resist that. Side sleeping is the single most effective free change on a drinking night.

Elevate your head. Raising the head of the bed, or using a wedge, reduces the fluid pooling that swells nasal tissue when you lie flat.

Drink water alongside. Alcohol is a diuretic, and dehydration thickens mucus, which makes both nasal congestion and throat irritation worse.

Open the nose mechanically. A nasal strip lifts the outer walls of the nose to widen the nasal valve, which can offset some of the congestion alcohol causes. It does nothing about the throat relaxation, so treat it as a partial measure on these nights rather than a solution. Do not tape your mouth or strap your jaw closed. This one matters. Skip the sedative stack. Sleeping tablets, antihistamines that cause drowsiness, and alcohol all depress the same muscles. Combining them multiplies the effect on your airway.

The Nightcap Myth

The most common reason people drink close to bedtime is that it feels like it helps them sleep. It does help with one part of sleep and harms the rest.

Alcohol shortens the time it takes to fall asleep, which is the part you are awake for and therefore the part you notice. Everything after that happens while you are unconscious, so the fragmented second half, the extra awakenings, and the louder snoring never register as being caused by the drink. The next morning is filed under tiredness rather than under alcohol.

This is why self reported sleep quality after drinking is often much better than what a sleep recording shows for the same night. If you are using alcohol as a sleep aid, you are trading a faster start for a worse night, and your partner is absorbing the noise.

Test It on Yourself for a Week

You do not need a sleep lab to find out how much of your snoring is down to alcohol. You need two weeks and a phone.

Record yourself with a snoring app or a simple voice recorder for seven consecutive nights while drinking as you normally would, noting how many units you had and how many hours before bed you stopped. Then repeat for seven alcohol free nights, keeping everything else the same: same bedroom, same pillow, same position habits, same bedtime.

Compare the two weeks on three things rather than one: how loud the peaks were, how much of the night contained snoring, and how you felt at 11 a.m. rather than at 7 a.m. Morning grogginess is a poor guide because it is affected by too many other variables, while late morning alertness tracks sleep quality more honestly.

Most people find the difference is larger than they expected, and specific: an evening finishing at 9 p.m. produces a very different recording from the same number of units finishing at midnight. That result is more persuasive than any general advice, because it is about your airway rather than an average.

When Snoring Is More Than Alcohol

Alcohol worsens snoring. It rarely creates the underlying problem on its own, and it can unmask one that was already there.

Speak to a GP if you snore loudly most nights whether or not you have been drinking, if anyone has seen you stop breathing or gasp during sleep, if you wake unrefreshed after a full night, or if you are sleepy during the day in a way that affects driving or work.

Those are the signs of obstructive sleep apnoea. It is diagnosed with a sleep study and it is treatable, and the meta-analysis above found that this group is exactly the one for whom alcohol does the most damage, roughly three times the effect seen in the general sample.
